I have seen occasional stray arcs inside the distributor cause a miss when it arcs. You can check it by taking a old or spare cap and cut the sides off it with a dremmel tool and a cutoff wheel, so...

I also used DVD's for backup, but when they got 10 or 15 years old some of them quit working and all I could get was a error message.
Also most new PC's do not have a DVD player in them so I stopped...

I took mine apart and washed out the old dried up grease from the gears with solvent. Installed new rope packing on the input shaft, made a new gasket, then filled it with transmission gear lube up...

Wash the part with soap and water, or alcohol using a old toothbrush to remove dirt and oil and you will have better coverage. If it is a hard shinny plastic it may not sink in very well.
