Before tearing into the trans, put in a bottle of Lucas trans leak repair. It works wonders on old dry seals. Go for a twenty mile ride and return, it may help.

If you are dealing with a 54, 55, or 56 passenger car, you can safely do away with the steady rest. Because some aftermarket motor mounts have a questionable quality, I drilled my side mounts to fit...

My 312 had some compression, and an Isky cam, and delivered about 11 inches of vacuum. It was enough to make the wipers run well, unless it was in fifth gear on a hill.

A Ranger rear axle should fit, one from a 4x4 Super cab with a factory hitch should be a 4.10. It will also have the big brakes.

Mr. Yergin has the answer in post ten. Buy a filter for a 55 Ford and use the fiber gasket. It is stiff enough to not squirt out like the modern rubber gasket.

The line I'm talking about is not a self tapper, it is from manufacturing. The line is very fine, you need to really look for it. I agree with you on it should seal at the tapper. They dont always.

I have seen new fitting nuts from overseas with a line down the threads. Fuel would follow the line and leak. I looked through a bunch of them and found older fittings with no line.

I never worked on one of that model, but earlier Ford axles had a tapered stud the went through to hold the spindle in place. The nut was the turn stop.

I had a 54, and a 55. Both were lowered a bit, and both had radials. I found that 225-70R15 on stock wheels would fit in the wheel well, but getting them in there was a bear. I had to remove the nuts...

Yup, the sender gasket is dried up. Never park inside with a full tank and it won't bother you. Removing the tank is a bear the first time.
