Re: Rear Axle Fastener Torque

Nope, you're fine. I read this entire thread and somehow still thought trumpet to banjo instead of torque tube...

Re: Scary ... What the hell happened ?

Yup, also been to a trusted shop and they were just as stumped as I was, they said everything was tight and the alignment was good. A new set of tires mostly eliminated the problem though it will...

Re: Emergency brake ?

Honestly, it wasn't a terrible job. I used a trolley jack under the banjo and under the torque tube where the radius rods attach. Jacked up the front jack to match the height of the u joint and...

Re: Scary ... What the hell happened ?

Yup, check everything and make sure nothing is loose. Many install a steering stabilizer to fix this. It works but doesn't fix the underlying problem.

Most seem to pin the death wobble problem...

Re: Rear Axle Fastener Torque

They are through holes, not blind.

Edit: Was thinking of the axle housing to banjo connection

Re: Emergency brake ?

They can, I had to adjust mine when I installed new cast drums. The rods to the drums have an adjustable clevis just like the service brake rods. Mine were adjustable at the E brake cross shaft end....

Are you out of adjustment on the e brake clevises?

Re: Shipping

Yup, Bert's has the best shipping prices I've seen from any of the vendors. For a while I figured they'd be more expensive since I live on the east coast and they are in CO. Well that just wasn't the...

Re: Generator output

Still seems high to me. If you don't do much night driving try getting it down around 3-5A. Also, you really shouldn't be getting a charge at idle. Usually need to bring the engine speed up to a high...

Re: 28-29 Phaeton

Can't comment on the 28/29 Phaeton but I've driven a 30 and it had less room up front and much tighter doors than my 30 Fordor. Seems typical for most A's that the real room is in the rear seat.

Re: Model A Improvements

If someone comes out with a water pump delete kit Henry would probably approve of that.

As far as what I approve of, cast iron drums top the list.

Re: Poor quality transmission roller bearings

When I ordered from Brattons about 3 weeks ago they still had the long bearings but not the short. Bert’s had them in stock and they look exactly like the ones pictured. You might want to call and...

Re: Dave Lopes Fordor Model A

That has got to be the best example of an original car that I have seen. There have been other pictures of various parts of the car posted in tech threads as a guide.

I have a similar question to...

Re: Zenith Gas Supply to Secondary Well

Also, where on the Cape are you from? I'm seriously considering driving the A out there for our annual vacation in Dennis. Should be a fun drive if I leave early enough to beat traffic on the bridge.

Re: Zenith Gas Supply to Secondary Well

I would think the secondary well should be screwed in tight, if it isn't it can vibrate around and turn. All that I've seen have been tight.

Also, there is a thread here somewhere that states...

Re: Sick ahooga horn

Wow just looked it up and the kit with the retaining ring is $33. Seems a little steep.

Re: Transmission Bearings?

You were right, Joe. With the main gear in and rear retainer tight there was no movement. Have everything back together now, nothing binds and everything sounds and feels good. Just need to do a...

Re: Sick ahooga horn

It does. Pull the spider off the end of the light switch rod and then pull the rod up out of the steering column. There are 4 tabs you will have to bend straight then pull the horn button retaining...

Re: oil leaking friom shift tower

If it's not over full this is most likely the problem. Where did you get your 600W from, Bill?

Re: Dip stick use question

Yup, my general procedure is start braking, roll window down, signal for the turn, get annoyed at the driver coming the other way waving hello at my hand signal, pull in my hand and mutter about how...

Re: Balancing

This has always been a confusing issue to me because to my mind shouldn't the rebuilder or the machine shop make sure that all rotating masses in the engine are balanced and if not take the...

Re: Backfiring, Stalling, Shaking..... all together.

Also, make sure that flag terminal that attaches to the points is bent at a 90 degree angle otherwise it can contact the spring and cause all sorts of weird intermittent problems. Ask me how I know...

Re: cables

At that size both should work but bigger is probably better in this case.

Re: Transmission Bearings?

I did that without installing the main gear, just bolted on the bearing retainer and there was still quite a bit of play. Will have to dry fit it with the main gear as well to get a real picture....
