First you should check the gauge by shorting out the sender wire. With the ignition on the gauge should go full scale to "cold". If this happens then your problem is the sender(s). New ones are...

I think the second gear sychro brass blocker ring is probably worn and changing the transmission oil to something lighter might make things worse.

Power valve check: with the valve in place and the bowl plugs in fill the bowl about half way with gas. Look for drips of gas from the valve. Any moisture of gas indicates a leaking gasket or leaking...
