I think the second gear sychro brass blocker ring is probably worn and changing the transmission oil to something lighter might make things worse.

Power valve check: with the valve in place and the bowl plugs in fill the bowl about half way with gas. Look for drips of gas from the valve. Any moisture of gas indicates a leaking gasket or leaking...

And if you are still using the original type full vacuum distributor you are pretty much confined to to pre'57 Ford product carburetors which have the venturi vacuum passage.
