Re: 59A Flatty. A good candidate for rebuild? It's full of sludge!

Sludge in these engines is often caused by water leaking from a bad gasket or a cracked block. I got a bucket full of old black sludge out of a couple of these. Both were cracked. One crack was in...

Re: Balancing the flywheel on the 41 pickup at home.

You can fine tune the balance by adding a lock washer to each bolt. Adding, removing and moving to the next one around the circle until you get the best result. I always doubted this process until I...

Re: Perch pin removal help

I have removed them with a 30 ton press. Some would not come out, though. Heat the axle bore to red hot and push with the biggest press you have access to. Be very careful using a press at maximum...

Re: newly rebuilt and a knock

If you have to push down on the distributor it sounds like the spring that holds the dist./oil pump drive gear up has popped out of position. That spring kind of wants sits at a cockeyed angle anyway...

Re: TT truck year id

It looks like a '27 to me. The motor or the block at least is probably a factory replacement part. Ford provided replacement parts for these for a couple of years after production ended. There were...

Re: Oil Drain Tube Thread Size

Ford used two different sizes of these tubes. The one the vendors have is the later version meant to cure a problem with clogging, etc. You may have to search for a used one or drill and tap the cap...

Re: Stall on incline

Check the screen in the carburetor. It's in the fitting where the fuel line attaches. You obviously have a restriction somewhere in the line. Check the sediment bowl, too. the originals can get rust...

Re: Resistor for 12V coil

Have you tried a stock resistor for a '41 ? to '48 ? It's a small wire wound resistor that would drop 6 volts down to 3 point something. with 12 volts it may put you in the ballpark.
Early V8 parts...

Re: 8ba into 39 pickup.

I put a '52 8CM in my '42 car. I was a pretty easy swap. I had to use the truck pan with a '37 pitman arm to clear the pan and tie rod, truck water pumps and reducing hoses for the top of the...

Re: Steering box oil level

There will still be some oil in the box when you pull the light switch and tube. If you fill the thing to the top it will often, if not usually, leak oil into the switch and onto the ground. There is...

Re: Indication of a radiator leak???

Wash the corrosion off with straight vinegar and a soft scrub brush. It would likely show more easily if it's a leak. Coolant loss out the overflow tube is pretty normal if the radiator is filled...

Re: Scratching my head. Whatzit?

No letters or stars on the number pad. The absence of oil holes for the cam bearings and lifters has me thinking these are oiled via a passage from the oil pump (?).

Scratching my head. Whatzit?

Here's one for the researchers among you. A couple of years ago I came by a well worn Model A engine to overhaul and put in my '29 parade jalopy. Before I took it apart I checked the engine number...

Bob, thanks for the info. It is indeed a copy of the Police head (5.2:1). No maker listed. This engine was very well worn but still had compression readings of:

A head question

I'm overhauling a model A engine I acquired this summer. The serial number is not the regular number used on cars and trucks, so I assume it was a commercial engine. The numbers look to be factory...
