If it's easy to remove the oil pan , go for it , the pump will come out with one more bolt .
If you have to remove front end stuff , just pull the motor .
First I would mount a mechanic an gauge...

Aren't you also having the pvc issue ?
Have you hooked up a vacuum gauge ? Vacuum gauge will tell you conditions of motor . It's a lot easier than pulling apart your motor , DONT FORGET, when it...

I use to use a large socket and push them on . If they're the ones that are to temporarily hold the drums on before the wheels and lugs were installed .

A possible that hasn't been mentioned, check your exhaust . A plucked exhaut will do that also . It's unlikely, but worth looking into .
Stick a vacuum gauge on it while driving.

Glad you got it working as it was . I guess you need to put the pedal to the metal a little more often. I run marvel in my gas , seems to keep everything working nicely.

Stick a vacuum gauge on it . See if you have a steady reading if steady it's not a valve if low it's something else .

I think you've had compression issues or a piece of carbon broke off and is in the valve seat and that's not what's causing the blow by , bear with me . As you accelerated up the hill , VACUUM...

A lifetime ago , while tearing down some flatheads in the shop I was working at , I noticed all the stationary pump motors had no baffles in the pan , the 2 car/ truck engines did have the baffles ....

If you have a go pro or other camera set up , mount it secured under the car pointing at the steering linkage and see if anything is binding or not visible when static testing .

If you still need to find the cyl . Remove one plug wire at a time and run , if it's not that cyl it'll drop even more when the bad one acts up . Yes it's time consuming but it'll find it usually ....
