I did the same thing with a rebuilt engine. I had the cam set 180 out (backwards). Even set that way the engine would pop and backfire. I checked and checked. I stopped working on it. Two weeks...

I did ask and was told: "You can use full synthetic hydraulic oil 30 to 40 weight, as far as maintenance just check them every couple of years."
