Best break in oil right now is Driven from Joe Gibbs racing. Their BR40 is a 10w40 break in oil that costs around $8/qt, and comes highly recommended. Another very good break in oil at a good price...

As was said, I've been driving and rebuilding Ford Toploaders (the cast iron ones made from 1964-to 1973-ish) for 30 years.

The places that specialize in Toploader rebuild parts/rebuild kits...

GL-5 is supposed to be harder on bronze/yellow metals. GL-4 is supposed to be safe. GL-1 does not have the extreme pressure additives, and does not protect as well as the more modern oils.

An assembled V8 engine should not take excessive force to turn over with the spark plugs removed. If it is HARD to turn over, look for the reason. As Ron said, seals and rings are the main culprit...

Yes. The reduction in compression ratio would be drastic. Using two gaskets on a OHV sized combustion chamber (simple circle) adds a lot of space. Doing it on a flathead sized combustion chamber...

I ALWAYS recommend a return line when using electric fuel pumps. They work much better, last longer and run cooler when they can circulate the fuel. They are not usually happy when 'dead headed'...

It is also IMPERATIVE to use the same gasket with the torque plate that you'll be using on the engine. Using the gasket makes a big difference... especially with heads that have a fire ring around...
