Cleaning out the cooling system

I have a 1929 motor that has a build up of "brown crud" in the cooling system. Since I am rodding the radiator, I would like to get the inside of the engine cooling system cleaned out as well.

Having a difficult time looking for a short in the distributor. The system is has power through to the points arm. Testing for up to 15 minutes with the points open, the ignition system is stable...

Attached shows a 3.75" ignition head stud on the left and the 3.5" standard head stud on the right. The side view also shows the higher "collar".
