Re: Painting Accent Stripes

"Not all were striped with a brush. A few branches did use the wheel striping tools."

I couldn't find that in my library. Would like to get a copy of the publication if you don't mind...

Re: Painting Accent Stripes

If you are interested in the way Ford did the striping in the factory, pick up a copy of How to Restore Your Model A Vol 1 (Green book). Murray Fahenstock wrote a complete article on how it was done....

Re: Painting Accent Stripes

Pin striping was done in the factory by hand. It was done by using a special brush which held a lot of paint. It is still done that way today. The paint used is called One Shot. Used by sign...

Re: Over Drive

Based on your comment "small motor sticking out the side" I would say it is a Early V8 Borg-Warner converted to fit a Model A. That "motor" is actually a solenoid used to engage the OD. The caution...

Re: Oil change process

No. It will go directly into the oil pan. The drip try can only be filled or added to by the oil circulating system driven by the operation of the engine.

Re: 31 model a differential drive shaft removal technique

To remove the Drive Shaft with Pinion Gear as a assembly:
1. Remove the Torque Tube from the Banjo.
2. Using the Drive Shaft Puller (Brattons P/N 6335) pull the Drive Shaft and Pinion Assembly from...

Re: pinto engine on model A

Bought a very nice '31 Vicky with a California Pinto and hydraulic brake conversion. Pulled all that junk out of it and made it a Model A again. Nice, nice car now. Sold the engine. Probably some...

Re: 31 roadster top boot installation

Hooch mine has 4 snaps on the back wall of the package tray to snap the boot in place. They work fine.

Re: F150 overdrive

There are 3 OD ratios available on the RTS transmission. 27.6%, 37.9% and 41.1%.
With a stock engine a 3.78 rear end ratio and a 27.6% works very well. The 68B is fairly light so you might be OK...

Re: Mysterious hole in valve chamber?

I bought a brand new (Not rebuilt) Diamond engine that had never been assembled. It had the busted out hole above the timing gear for timing gear lubrication.
Worked on many Model A engines and...

Re: broken cylinder head studs

I bought a Broken Stud Drill Out tool from Brattons several years ago. Can't count the number of broken studs I have drilled out over the years in my shop. Never damaged the threads. Brattons P/N...

Re: Can the TDC pin be off by 90 Degrees?

""How do you know if the piston is at the top for the compression stroke?""

The INTAKE Valve has closed completing the Intake Cycle. When the piston comes up and reaches the top both INTAKE and...

Re: Can the TDC pin be off by 90 Degrees?

Tablemaker lets do a little review here:
We are working on a 4 cycle engine. Intake, Compression, Power, Exhaust, in that order.
With 1 spark plug out, observe the INTAKE Valve.
#1 Piston at the...

Re: Spinning stud on rear wheel

Have done this many times over the years because I did not have a puller:
Remove the hubcap.
Remove the cotter pin in the axle nut.
Loosen the axle nut one turn.
Install the cotter pin.
Drive...

Re: QUICK - 1930 Fordor Body Wood Condition Check?

Check the rear doors for fit and looseness. The hinges are mounted on the body and the screws are into wood. If the wood is weak or rotten the doors will sag and will flex. Look close. Replacing...

Re: Fit problem with reskined rumble lid

The fit might have been correct until the welding was done. I would try using a Dremmel and remove the weld. Then check the fit. If it is still too wide check to see that the lid has a slight dome...

Re: Re-skin deck lid

Same experience as Blue Oval. Had to metal work (hammer & dolly) both sides and bottom to make it fit. Fold over and cut off the excess created by bending. Very time consuming. But looks great.

Re: Straight Slotted instead of Cross-Point

The Phillips screw was not invented until after Model A production ceased. Came into use around 1937.

Re: OD power

Based on 2500rpm, 62mph and 26% Mitchell would guess it has a 4:11 ratio differential. If so you are about on the top of it.

Re: Proper way to re-torque?

Visit Vince Falter's WEB site (fordharage.com)and go to ENGINE section. Open "Head Nut Torquing Instructions" written by Larry Brumfield. If anyone knows about heads and head gaskets he does.
