Maybe I should re phrase that and ask How do you stop the pin coming out of the cross shaft? I have looked on Van Pelts site and others regarding rebuilding a steering box but have not found...

When replacing the roller wheel in a 1940 Ford steering box how do you secure the wheel shaft in position to stop it moving and coming out of the roller shaft?

Another option is to add an additional steel rod prop which folds down along the inner fender as a PO did on my 47 Mercury.

These cars are even worse than the Fords as the hood is longer and...

Great info guys. I compared it to a starter spring and that definately where it has come from.
I had the engine on a stand and when I levered the sump off it twisted away from me and I didn't see...

It could be . It has a slight twist in it but it is a perfect fit on the crank snout.
It also appears like it had a small keyway type cut out each side where it has broken.

The mercury in your photo is a 1946 model as it has a painted grill surround with three small chrome strips each side and long strips on the hood.

I've had an ebay Aluminium Champion radiator in my Forty for the last few years and it runs cool regardless of the weather.

It runs about 1/3 up the gauge in traffic and on the open road...

If you are going to separate the hubs and drums you will need to get the special tool to cut the swages off the studs to let them come apart. you can't just press them off.
