Re: Distributor Question

Is the washer really needed? Seems like the condenser keeps itself well centered in the dist housing?

Re: Jumps and jerks in 1st and 2nd gear

I also have this problem with my light flywheel, V-8 clutch but only if I'm trying to drive slow in either 1st or second. It will jerk back and forth with the car idling along on level pavement.
I...

Re: Oil on head stud?

About the only way to get oil is if it is already in the water and coming through a seep in the head gasket.
I would drain the water, run the engine without water at fast idle for two minutes, let...

Beak in oil

Breaking in a new ring job. Thought I'd ask if there's a preferred oil to break in since non detergent is very hard to find.

Is 10W30 good enough?

Thanks

Re: Ruff Idle problem

I would try shorting out spark plugs one at a time and see if there's one that doesn't make much difference in the running. Then change that plug.

Re: New to Ford Barn & Ive Got A Couple Questions

The pencil screen and a good sediment bowl work very well to keep the fuel clean.

I don't use aftermarket inline filters because it's hard to tell when they're full.

When you do your top try to...

I'd check with Bert's in Colorado or Arizona Model A.

Re: Babbitt or inserted engine ? ? ?

Wow, amazing work.

Bill Barlow in Bend, OR (541-389-2694) also does beautiful babbitt, but I think he just does mains. Very good price at $350.

Re: Looking for a Good Soul to Detail the Marvel Carburetor

Dave Renner at rennerscorner.com says they have numerous Marvels and all the parts for them, even though they only advertise the rebuild kits and misc other parts.

Just get in touch and he'll fix...

Re: damaged piston what? why?

The lack of any piston damage above the oil ring says there was no excessive combustion temp or detonation.

So if the oil ring was the problem, that could only have happened through things like...

Re: Rear Main Oil Leak Help!

Also, excessive blow-by can pressurize the crankcase and push oil out the rear seal. It also comes out the breather and distributor hole, too!

Re: Burtz seal question

Another way to test is to assemble everything, turn the block vertical, squirt oil into the drain tube to fill it up, and watch to see if oil leaks past the seal.

Some light seepage is okay after...

I've heard that vinegar makes a good clean out.

Anyone used this method?

What mixture did you use? Was it effective?

Thanks...

Re: cam replacement

I did this, too. Not a big deal. Hardest part was taking radiator and paraphernalia off.

I used the wire in spring method to make very sure a tappet doesn't drop down while cam's out.

I think...

Re: Model A drive line

I like that combo, too.

Takes a nice strong motor to do hills without lugging, but definitely enhances cruise speed.

Using 16" wheels and slightly smaller diameter radial tires gets around the...

Re: baby steps but getting there....

Does rear spring not go up into cross member?

I usually put spring in by itself, leave it loose at U bolts, then attach shackles and tighten everything (don't tighten shackle bars, just snug and...

Re: Model A drive line

The F-150 overdrive, 4 spd transmission conversion is hands down best IMHO. The kit is spendy, $3000, but all inclusive and you can order the overdrive ratio you want.

I helped Carl G. with his...

Re: Piston/Head Clearance

When in a pinch, two copper gaskets with copper coat is a good, cheap alternative.

Since you're mostly apart I'd mill the pistons. About .050" max.

Re: Idle adjustment problem

I'm a big fan of the Marvel carbs for the reason you state...they don't die on hard brake...because the float is mounted on the side, not lengthwise.
Can be found on Ebay or rebuilt at...
