I have the same issue. My quick fix is split a straw or tube and slip it over the cable wire. This stopped the short for now but I'll need the new cable.
Question is "which cable?". I'm seeing...

I checked the bearing and it will spin. When I press the peddle the throw out bearing will move all the way in. But the problem remains, the pressure plat fingers are not returning to the in gauged ...

Yes .The fingers are remaining in. The rest if the parts are doing their part.
When I adjusted the linkage I think I went most of the way on the rod.
