Re: Locating dimple on timing gear

This is not incorrect. The backup distributor if set up properly can run forever as though it were new. Human hands are the only thing that can change a mechanical junction (which timing is) whether...

Re: Engine Splash Pan Installation Documentation?

A couple washers are needed between the oil pan flange and two tabs with the slots on the splash pan to take up the "slack" under the two bolt heads on each side. Don't want the pan bolts to flatten...

I have new reflectors and rubber lens seals - reflectors are Taiwan, seals are unknown origin. How in the world can the seals be kept in the reflector while the lens and retaining ring are being...

Re: Locating dimple on timing gear

When you do find it borrow some of the wives nail polish and dab some in the dimple. Makes it a lot easier to find with a mirror and flashlight next time.

Re: Gas Aspiration Problem?

BTW the oil slinger covers the marked crank tooth, it is either (forgot which) 1 tooth left or right of the crank key way.

Re: Gas Aspiration Problem?

Timed properly with the timing pin seating it can not be 180 out. The shafts from the cam gear are all connected off center. Remember cam to crank gear ratio is 2 to 1 - so no way to be off 180, ...

Re: Timing puzzle

Also praying for your daughter. I haven't seen any "official" timing procedure with a light so I would suspect that procedure. With uninsulated spark plug wire there is no telling where the spark...

Re: Bolts rear motor mount to clutch housing

I don't understand why if someone put them in, why can't they be taken out without destroying something?

Re: block cleaning

The main problem with electrolysis is that it is "line of sight" between the 2 poles, so no going around corners.

Re: Front brake repair on 31

I haven't found a reamer that will go through both bushings so I take mine to a machine shop to have honed and get a much better fit.

Re: Mallory distributor parts availability

Mallory has been bought out a couple times and it seems whoever owns it now is not interested in the 4 cylinder market, try Mercruiser. I've gotten a couple dist. parts from them.

Re: checking timing

I don't see why the rotor pin has to be on the same plan as the distributer pin as long as the closest points (gap) are .020.

Re: Proper way to re-torque?

Unless I really misunderstand the timing details it is no big deal to pull the distributer. Just pull it out and slap it back in regardless if you turn the engine or distributer - you can't miss...

Re: Tudor Value

Brent, I think most people are able to get a reasonable grip on the cost of Start, Stop and Steer whether it be do it yourself plus some minor machine work or professionally accomplished. The real...

Re: Center main bearing

I flat plate sanded to approx. .00157 and will call it good. On to the rear main, the bearing is an insert not like shown in any suppliers parts books. It has machined thrust surfaces on each end, ...

Re: Main bearing bolts

Be very cautious using these. I can only speak for my own engine and one other. The counterbore in the block is too deep for the sealing washer and the diameter is not large enough for the steel...

Center main bearing

Pulled the pan for a look around and found the center main Plastigaged out to .0025 with no shims left. What would you do? Polish the cap and try again, flat plan the cap on glass, machine shop...

Re: Front Crank Seal Replacement Questions

If the bottom cover is worn from gear rubbing put it back on upside down for the same reason as above.

Re: Front Crank Seal Replacement Questions

I have never purchased pan rope seals from that supplier but if they are the same as Berts and Snyders you will make a big mistake NOT soaking in oil, especially if you cut them flush - soaked or...

Re: Front Crank Seal Replacement Questions

I remove the bottom 2 and loosen the top 2 rear mount bolts and watch the accelerator linkage real close in case my jacking gets a little too aggressive.
