With the cardboard inserted, check across the points with an ohmmeter. If there's continuity, you have a short, either from the ignition cable being screwed in to the body to deeply, or your plate...

I run 6v alternator and the 50/32cp headlights from Bert's. I also used silverware polish on the reflectors. People comment on how bright my headlights shine.

Just out of curiosity, which direction is the play in relation to the vertical plane from the crankshaft pulley? Is the play towards the radiator, towards the head, or split the difference?

My old secondary well was screwed in/down as far as it would go. I screwed my new secondary well in/down as far as it would go just to get the jet to clear and the body pieces to come together....
