If I remember right it gives you an anchor spot when the screwdriver is in the point slot for setting the gap. Also lets you hold the correct gap when the screws are tightened to the plate.

Check all your electrical connections then do a load test on the battery. Sounds stupid but a friend had the same problem and it turned out to be a bad battery. Who would have thunk it!

I can't say my muffler or manifold is in the best condition, I used one without any gasket or sealer goop and I have a seal with no leaks. It worked for me.
