Re: 8ba oil pump question
The gear/cover clearance is given in the reprint of the manual I have for '49-'51 Fords. I don't have access to it at the moment, but I believe it is .008"

Re: Vacuum Leak
I vote for brass. I'd keep an eye on that rubber plug; it could deteriorate rather quickly from the heat and fumes in the engine compartment.

Re: New Eddie Myers’s heads question
The engine was supposedly "professionally built" with an Iskendarian MAX-1 camshaft. I had assumed that everything was done properly. I picked up the completed short block and completed the assembly....

Re: New Eddie Myers’s heads question
The reason I asked is that was what I did with a set of new Offenhauser heads (just bolt 'em on without checking) on a 276" Merc thirty years ago. I was never as satisfied with the power that engine...

Re: New Eddie Myers’s heads question
I'm curious about what you would do after "checking for piston and valve clearance" and found, as the O/P found, you had .141" clearance over the piston. I wouldn't think to "bolt them on and go"...

Re: Street Cam
Depending on what it's going into, I'd reconsider the 3.08 gears. Maybe on a very light roadster, but not for anything heavier. Makes a difference in which cam you go with as well. The whole thing...

Re: V8 on engine stand
I have no actual experience, but I'd bet that the Model A adapter won't work. Even it it did bolt on, the engine would be at a weird angle.
BTW, If you have a later ('49-'54) engine without the...

Re: 39 Ford bumper jack
I carry one in my '51. I have oversize tires on the rear (225R75-15) and I need it to get the body high enough off the ground so I can get the tire off after I jack the axle up with a scissors jack....

Re: Cadillac 331 in a Ford
When I was first on the H.A.M.B., I saw a link to "Belmont's" site. At that time, they had the entire Offenhauser catalog on it. Turned out that it was just for reference only, but it drove me crazy...

Re: Stuck Valve ?
I'd be looking very closely at the valves/springs/keepers for the valves in that cylinder.

Re: 46 pickup flathead headers?
You will find this true for a lot of dealers in these old Ford's. It seems that the guys with the best selection of hard to find parts are the ones that don't have everything listed, which is logical...

Re: Installing a wiring harness
I think you guys are missing his point and not answering his real question. I don't know the O/P's actual age, but I do know it can be a real problem. When I was 78, I would have tackled removing the...

Re: Complicated Compression Ratio
First of all, I will have to say that I agree with the posters who say that is very difficult to get to much compression in a flathead. I used to "cc" heads, but I have found it easier to just check...

It sounds like you've been at this for a while now. I think you're gonna hafta take it apart. I'd remove the intake first and take a gander. Who knows? You may have have a broken spring or maybe a...

Re: Stuck Valve ?
I would look the valve assembly (especially the spring) over carefully first to make sure there are no external problems if you have not already done so.

Very disappointing to hear. It's not uncommon these days for good companies to go bad. New management, financial problems, or just the general malaise these days.
I hope it is not the case with...

Re: 51 woodie speedometer cable
DO NOT use grease on the speedometer cable. It will attract dirt and gum everything up. There is special speedometer cable lube, which I believe is a combination of graphite and light oil.
I do...
