Rainmaker Ron used an oiled thin strip of felt looped around these to maintain lubrication. I think he posted a picture 'how to' awhile back.

Those cracks could have came from a large pot hole. The whole suspension to and fro is referenced to that area via the motor mounts to the rest of the car. Cracks are common to that piece.

Check the junction box terminals between the box and the firewall, the repros would easily short due the heads protruding beyond the box although with the age of your A it sounds like you have an...

Suspect the gas supply, could be restrictive, go ahead and look at the filter. If it's OK at least you can check that off your list.

Large gauge copper electrical wire will work. If too large, chuck it up in a drill press and file to size.
