We have a shop manufactured spreader, a porter power and threaded rod. I usually use the threaded rod because it is the least dangerous. If you are just going to replace the spring without removing...

I never asked him about what chemicals he uses. He has two tanks, one for stripping paint, undercoat and body filler. The tank is heated. Parts stay in for 4 to 7 days and he pressure washes them...

Most 41's I have worked on look like you describe, outward shackles. In 42 they added the panhard bar to eliminate the sway. All the 40's I have worked on are 45 degrees inward.

Grease will seep out around axle key or anomalies in the tapered axel shaft. That is why the fiber washer is installed in the hub.

I remove the center bolt and install a long piece of threaded rod with lock nut on one end.

Yes, it had been hit in a few places and the door checks were broken. Dent in both cowl sides from door opening too far. I believe I made an 1/8th inch shim.
