Either should work fine as long as the surface prep work is done well.
I don't know what powder coating costs but unless it's for a super nice show car it may not be worth the investment.

Yes, the engine block numbers are most easily seen when the vehicle is on a lift, along with lower body and frame rust & bondo, and driveline / suspension shortcomings.

If the measurements I just got from the door frames of a pair of Birds ('55 & '57) is an indication, it's not a bolt-in swap. But I've never tried it either.

poolplayer1, since I have a '55 Bird and not a full-sized '55 I'm not familiar with other parts sources for the bigger cars, I'm sure there are several.

Because the old King/Seeley gauges don't electrically function the same way as newer repro senders the odds aren't the best.

It's possible that it might work correctly across...

According to this (T-bird) link you do not need to change original King-Seeley style Temp and Fuel gauges or sending units as long as they are original working matched pairs....

tommyleea, the hassle is... the '54 to '56 distributors advance the timing based only on a 0 to 5 inches of vacuum signal from a '54 to '56 carburetor. The '57+ distributors added mechanical advance...
