Re: Temp Gauge Adjustment

The third 37-53 reproduction sender was working okay until a few months ago. I may have inadvertently shorted the sender wire to ground for long enough to damage the gauge. As much as I hate working...

Temp Gauge Adjustment

My temp gauge is reading too high to live with. Placing 1.5 volt D cell on the power input to the gauge, with the wire to sender grounded, moves the needle from barely visible right to the 3/4 mark....

Re: No more gallivanting - temp question

Canada, eh? For sure make sure the spark is not retarded. The concentration of anti-freeze significantly affects the heat carrying capacity of the coolant in the system. During summer you can run...

Re: Generator or alternator ?

My generator "look alike" alternator (12v) from PowerGen gave out with maybe 4,000 miles on it. I took it to an old school generator/alternator shop and they figured out that it is just a small...

What carburetor and manifold are you using, and why?

Re: 1947 side loader trans seal replacement

Are you replacing the seals with the transmission in the car? The side plate may be tricky to remove, because of interference with the pedal mechanism. Anybody know more about that?

Re: Window cranker repair 47 coupe

Doesn't the window crank pin to the regulator shaft? If sloppy handle is the issue, you can line the handle with some strips of aluminum foil to give it a snug fit.

Re: PennGrade Motor Oil

VR-1 is still very good for new builds because the high level of zinc protects the cam while it gets through the initial break-in. Use it straight for the initial run and first oil change.

Re: Scraping noise when turning

If wheel bearings are loose, could be drum against backing plate. Dangerous.

Re: Function trumps Awesome

Update on the erratic idle.

Put my hand over the secondaries at idle and they were both breathing way too much air in. Turns out the secondaries were not going all the way closed with foot off...

Re: Temperature Sender

Can that adjustment be made from the back of the instrument, or do you have to remove and disassemble?

Re: Temperature Sender

Yeah, I get that, but ..... If the gauge were biased toward cold, I would be fine with it. But it is biased toward hot, so when the needle gets to the hot mark, the temp is really about 190, which...

Temperature Sender

My temp gauge reads about one increment high. When the water temp (measured by temp gun) is at 160 (should be the center mark) it reads 180 (the mark half way from center to the Hot mark).

The...

Re: Engine rapping noise 59A

"Tapping" could be a loose valve from cam lobe wear. Maybe one cam lobe did not get properly coated, or the engine sat too long between assembly and test run. That said, a loose valve should be...

Re: Function trumps Awesome

Good suggestion, and a lot cheaper than a whole new manifold and carb setup.

Re: Function trumps Awesome

Stalling at stops seems to happen randomly, whether I have had my foot in it or not. Happens with idle jets set rich or lean. Floats are set a shade under 1/2 inch. Never fails to start right up. ...

Function trumps Awesome

Planning to take the '41 across the country in the Spring, for which reliability becomes the priority.

I have been fooling with my Offy 3x2 with chrome Super 97's (1 primary with choke and idle...

Re: 41 Merc radiator and trunk latch questions

No way to get a regular wrench in there. I got one on my '41 loose by tapping the points on the nut with a blade screwdriver and a mallet. Probably best to give it a day or two of liquid wrench or...

Re: Water pump comparisons

What anti-freeze mix are you using? On a hot day try running plain water which has a significantly higher heat carrying capacity than 50/50 antifreeze. That might get you the 10 degrees you are...

Re: Water pump comparisons

Tried Dennis Carpenter water pumps as they claim to improve flow at idle, which is where my overheating problems were worst. Made no discernable improvement. Ultimate solution was a higher capacity...

Re: 39 starter circut

My brand new repo starter button was very intermittent. Found an original on Ebay for $15, which is a little high, but much better than the other one on Ebay which was priced at $45. No problems...
