I have had a 59AB engine in my '36 coupe since 1954. The engine has many upgrades to improved the power out put and reliability.
From my point of view the '42-48 59 AB engines are the way to go in...

The correct thermostats for the '48 and earlier Fords mount in the upper hoses directly above the heads. The stats are made to slide up inside of the hose. See attached pix.

How much the wheels are pitted would govern how much you fill the pits in the wheels. I would suggest that you keep in mind your are dealing with a "truck", which is a tool, so don't over restore it...
