Re: Overheating cured by adding thermostat

First off, I don't think water pumps on model A's are pumping too fast.
Next, it appears regulating, (slowing the flow of coolant) has solved or masked another issue. (my point is the car worked...

Re: A little wood rot around screw holes

I use pieces of split oak firewood from my woodpile. There are always slivers of oak loose on the logs to be pulled off in various sizes or trimmed with a pocket knife for gluing into oversize holes...

Re: Sick ahooga horn

Voltage and current resistance can be a culprit! If the horn switch is not making good contact, if the wiring is sub par for the current, if the commutator is dirty, these kinds of electrical things...

Re: Shut Off Valve Leaking

Lotta discussion about your question. I understand the part about the valve not closing all the way. Had the same problem show up as a carb leak on the garage floor. And in my view, you have...

Re: Steering Damper

These "steering dampers" are normally installed due to shimmy or other steering issues. Yet the solution to fix a problem, to me, is not to add a part to hide the real problem. Since your vehicle...

Re: Black goop coming from head gasket

The black gooey stuff is a creosote kind of mix from engine gas explosions leaking out the gasket. Head gaskets replaced normally require being re-torqued after a run or so! At this point, re-torque...

Re: Electrical

Those darn headlight connectors are the main reason I added a line fuse, and also wired around the connectors, (left them in place for looks) and no more problems!

Re: 1930 Model A. Runs great for about 15 minutes

Fuel flow problem from tank! as a check, remove gas line as rocket1 suggest and using air pressure, blow back in line to tank, just to see if rust gets moved away from tank outlet, and see how long...

Re: Proper way to re-torque?

Never knew the torque increases but, all nuts get 35 then 45 and then fully tighten. And this method certainly cannot hurt anything and keeps the head and block mating equally to the gasket. And, get...

Re: Proper way to re-torque?

From observing my dad, a mechanic from the era of all cast iron engines, he would start with a cold engine, loosen and then retighten in ft/lb steps to get to the proper ft/lbs. That meant he would...

Re: Fmd

The old style plastic cans still can be found at garage sales and so on! They are getting harder to find, but every once in a while one pops up! Some folks price them out of reality! Not for me!

Re: Cast-iron brake drum fit

I find as I get older, I should write a checklist of items to be done to install brake shoes properly, and in particular on my Model A Ford! I stated on this post chain, I was having the same problem...

Re: Novel Solution for inoperative Tail Light ?

Nothing hurt! A great recommendation for WD40! I use it all the time on electrical trailer hitch plugs to get good contact! Also spray it on sockets any time bulb replacements are accomplished. Good...

Re: Spark-Lever Posistion

EXACTLY!

When purchased, my car required full advance all the time. That should have tipped me off to a timing issue yet so much other stuff to do on the car. Eventually got to the proper method...

Re: Sealed beam headlight help

The 6 volt halogens (all you can get any more) have a heavy draw on current. So, if there is any extensive night driving, then for an original 3 brush Ford Generator, it has to be cranked up to...

Re: Cast-iron brake drum fit

Took my drums to a local Machinist! He used is electronic caliper and came up with the same you did, 10.97! One suggestion he made, since I had the hubs swaged into new drums, was to take them to the...

Check the sealed beams connected to a 6 volt source to assure they are good! both low and high beam. If you are getting power at the connector and the sealed...

Re: Misfiring and backfiring when engine is warm

Check for fuel flow problem! A symptom where the engine at running speeds starts backfiring and bucking, and then when it is stopped, to me infers dirt getting pulled into a filter or tubing or inlet...

Re: Gas?

2 Cycle engines tend to not do well keeping a gas oil mix fuel stored in them over time. It tends to gum up and I would venture the equipment store kind of had that in mind in particular. 2 cycle...
