Those Chrysler/Dodge units had a torque converter in the mix. You could literally stop the vehicle in gear with your foot on the brake pedal while the engine continued to idle.

As can be seen here, it is not necessarily required that you REMOVE the hood to remove/replace an engine in a '40.

Man, why didn't I think about that? That was one reason that the Wilson Welding early Lincoln brakes were such a problem. They were built with that anchor NOT ADJUSTABLE. Doomed from the start.
