With some luck your alternator has the W connection itīs for tach drive.
Lots of the big trucks has this.
If you donīt have it open up the alternator install a wire to one of the stator windings...

Agree on above but if it only was for adjusting ratio that could probably have been done on the widebelt setup to...changing size of pulleys.

Since fan has a separate sheeve on the widebelt setup and pumps and generator sheeve diameter can be altered iīm not sure about that being the reason.

That black thick engine silicon is a favourite if the holes are a bit corroded....if rust has been reallly hard on it...tap for a pipeplug.

On 12v you should be able to take the signal from the coil with just about any tach as gauge...or are we talking the worlds first dieselpowered flathead :D

The thing is if you use a distributor of known origin you can walk into your local parts store.
When that SMT unit burns out you can hope that the importer has a replacement in stock now...in 10...

Holesaw with a thin plastic sleeve on outside...holesaw should have the diameter just above the inner diameter of ring grooves. Drill down past uppper 3 rings...then pistons usually go out.

If you are keeping the 6v system i would keep the generator...for way less then what that alternator costs your local startershop will check and refurbish what you have and you will be good to go.
