Re: Weard leaks

If it is only seeping through the filler material in the gasket you can put in some stop leak like others have said. If the gasket isn't hemmed on either end there's always a chance coolant will seep...

Re: Babbit vs Inserts

From reading multiple posts on the subject it seems that babbit tends to fail more gradually than inserts. If you hear a babbited engine making noise there is probably time to tighten things up...

Re: U Joint replacement Engine Out

Why not just pull the transmission? Easy to do with the engine out. Much easier to work on a bench. May also be prudent to change the transmission bearings at the same time.

Re: Need a new electric wiper on/off switch lever for 29 Tudor

Fred, it looks like the on-off lever that brattons makes that you have in your first post will fit but it may not be correct for your wiper. What type is it?

Re: Babbit vs Inserts

There are a few conversations on this topic that a search should bring up. I think a lot of people go to inserts because pouring babbit correctly is becoming a lost art. That being said, if you find...

Re: Need a new electric wiper on/off switch lever for 29 Tudor

That broken one looks like the on-off lever I have on my wiper. Does not seem to be reproduced by Brattons. Not sure if any other will work. It's nice that Bratton's is even making what they are for...

Re: U Joint Quality

Call up Berts and see if he has a good used one. That's the route I went after he told me the rebuild kits are poor quality. The one he sent me looked and felt almost brand new.

Alternatively,...

Re: Knocking at start up?

On my old engine, pushing the clutch in before startup would result in a loud clunk. The thrust was very worn and the crank would move about 1/16"... knocked louder from the center main and...

Re: Vacuum testing to diagnose fast idle

That just jogged my memory. My old boat with a Chevy 305 started running terribly so I went through all the checks, timing, fuel pressure, AND vacuum. The gauge read low around 13-17inHg and bounced...

Re: Rear spring shackles

It is possible. I will also recommend the good shackles. The cheap shackles work but the play in the bushings is absurd.

Re: Vacuum testing to diagnose fast idle

So, if I remember correctly, your original problems are fixed now? The last was the high idle right? Sounds like you got that done.

Not a huge job to pull the valve cover and take a look....

Re: Using 85 octane fuel

FWIW, most e85 gas is about 108 octane.

Re: Do You Guys Constantly Re-touch Wheel Spokes?

Not GPierce, but I usually torque lug nuts to 55lb-ft

Re: fish scale instead of torque wrench

Those numbers would come out to 19.92 in-lb. You're very close.

Re: Standard vs HD Clutch Disc

.004 is still within spec. Who makes the HD disc? The finger heights are supposed to be within .002. A finger adjustment solved my chattering clutch.

Re: wedding decoaration ideas

My grandparents chauffeured a family members wedding once and made a JUST MARRIED sign cut to fit the spare on the rear. Everyone thought it looked pretty good.

Congrats!

Re: Shift Tower & shift lever

Doubtful but anything is possible. With all the work you did, I would feel confident saying that rebuilding the tower will fix your jumping out of gear problem.

Re: Trans Bearings

I wrecked one of the o-rings when I rebuilt my transmission and then it dawned on me to chamfer the edges of the holes in the transmission case slightly. Used a small stone on the dremel and the...

Re: Rotella T4 oil, dirty oil

I've got about 1300 miles on it this season. Would have driven more but working on repairing some rotten wood I found. Changed it every 100 miles until it started coming out almost as clean as when...

Re: Rotella T4 oil, dirty oil

My gut tells me that the dirty black oil isn't specific to Rotella.

I would suggest changing the oil on your modern car at 500 miles and you'll probably find that the oil is also black and...

Re: New Radiator and Losing Coolant

If it's "burning" enough water/coolant the plugs and combustion chamber should look nice and clean. Might look slightly different with coolant vs water.

Re: U Joint Service

First off, that much play in that style U joint means a replacement is needed. Once that is done, put everything back together and with the speedometer gear off pump in grease until it starts pushing...
