Update: I ground the inside tab off a pinion thrust washer and shimmed the rear pinion bearing with it. It's pretty thick. Reassembled the axle housing. Backlash disappeared, but it binds a...

Dave in MN: We are rebuilding a rear end right now and have established a nice carrier bearing preload with a .010" gasket on each side of the banjo. But....there is a lot of pinion to ring gear...
