Carefully trace the wire that is attached to the + post of the coil. It should go to the distributor and the points. It might go there directly or it might go there through the ignition switch....

Take the air filter off until you figure things out.

Backfire out exhaust pipe is from unburnt fuel. You are running too rich or your spark is weak or irregular (cutting off and on).
