Abbreviations/Jargon

I just realized that the unfamiliar might not have a clue when abbreviations, jargon, etc. are used in a post. Don't assume the reader knows what you're talking about. Some of the newer/younger...

Re: .Is this old "Y"block a 54 or 55 ? or what?

"One vac can" refers to the distributor. For instance, 55 models had a single distributor vacuum pot, whereas 56 models had a double (stacked) vacuum pot for the vacuum advance. Neither had...

Re: Dana 44 pinion nut torque and preload

I'm afraid that what you are saying is beyond most of us. You might be better off talking to a differential specialist.

Re: My beloved Mustang V8 67'!

Soaking rubber parts in brake fluid is an old-school trick to revitalize, but I've not tried it. For window weatherstrips and other long pieces, you would need a lot of brake fluid and a large...

Re: Dana 44 gear swap help

Spicer yoke 2-4-8091X. Out of stock at Northern. Amazon has it, cheaper/w free shipping.
You can also get yoke, bolts, and seal for $66.06. Yoke, alone, $41.99.

Re: Dana 44 gear swap help

I'm back! You need Dana-Spicer 5-2140X. I can't remember if there's more than one 26-spline pinion yoke. There might be different lengths, but mine didn't require altering the length of the...

Re: Dana 44 gear swap help

I swapped my Dana 44's ring & pinion gears for 2.72s out of an 80s Corvette. I got the 26-spline pinion yoke and rear u-joint from Northern Drivetrain. The OEM winged U-joint is Dana-Spicer 5-2031X....

Re: Leaking differential

A banjo-style (not 9") was also used, but it wouldn't have a rear cover. Here are quotes from my 1955 Ford Car Shop Manual: "Passenger cars are equipped with a semi-floating, banjo housing, hypoid...

Re: Leaking differential

I don't like the idea of running on stands w/o gear oil; things happen. If it makes you feel better, drain it, wipe it out, spray it down with carb cleaner, WD40, etc., while spinning wheel by hand,...

Re: 1957 Thunderbird Master Cyl. Push Rod

The top one/w ridges is what was on my 55 T-bird's master. Yes, there should be a nylon/plastic tip on the end. The fit was pretty snug. I did not see any adhesive.

I converted to Wilwood front...

Re: I want a Automatic with overdrive in my T-Bird

Old Redneck, what did you decide to do for transmission/rear gear swap?

Re: oil bath conversion

The 1955-57 Thunderbird parts stores offer a reproduction chrome dress-up air cleaner assembly with a paper element that will fit 55-56 Teapot carburetors, but it isn't cheap.

Re: Edelbrock 500 for 292?

As you already know, the WCFB carburetor is not the original carburetor. It may, however, be considerably more valuable to someone for whose car it is original. you might want to research year and...

Re: Edelbrock 500 for 292?

The fuel boiling is not unique to the Edelbrock carbs. It is a common problem, particularly for 55-57 T-birds, regardless of carburetor brand. A phenolic spacer, not aluminum, will help, and anything...

Re: Edelbrock 500 for 292?

Make sure the air cleaner you buy has a drop base. An air cleaner that sits on top of the carburetor will not clear the hood if used with a carburetor adapter or spacer 1/2" or taller. 55-57 OEM air...

Re: 55 automatic

Correct. The air-cooled torque converters are bolted together. The seal is a source of leaks. If it is removed and disassembled, you might even find an ol' timer, who knows how to tweak it to...

Re: 55 automatic

Very little Fordomatic information, as you know, is in the reproduction 1955 Ford Car Shop Manual. However, you can purchase a reproduction 1955 Fordomatic Shop Manual from early Ford/Thunderbird...

Re: Replacement radiator fan for 292

According to The H.A.M.B., almost any Ford fan should fit an Edsel. Consensus is Edsels don't have fan shrouds. I would check with Edsel club/edsel.com. If you want to know what fits an Edsel, talk...

Re: Replacing Teapot carb on 1956 T-bird

I discovered that my inherited 55 Tbird had a 57 distributor, when a new 55 distributor cap wouldn't fit. However, the original 55 Holley 4000 "Teapot" was still in place. Gil Baumgartner (Gil's...

Re: Replacing Teapot carb on 1956 T-bird

You can get an aftermarket electronic tach-drive distributor for about $250+$40-$50 for a compatible coil, or you can get a new, replacement non-tach-drive distributor from an auto parts store for...

Re: Replacement radiator fan for 292

Providing a photo of the mounted fan would help. What you're describing doesn't sound right.
