Here are a couple of shots of the 46 that restored back in the 80's. I would say that the rear guards are smaller than the front, but since I sold the car long ago this is all I can help you with.

51 Merc has the right idea. I would put a 2x4 to spread the load. I would put them on the front and back of the running boards.

Leave your bumper alone and let the chrome shop handle the stripping. By the way I paid $1800 for the front and rear bumpers on on 46 about 3 years ago. It's not cheap but they look great.
