Wouldn't hurt I suppose; thru the years they have rusted out at the lower edge.
Theoretically, the only place water should get in is around the handle or wick thru the latch on the edge....possible....

Not as simple as written and .....likely not the spring
Those latches are really not a good design
There is a slide pin that the plunger works back and forth on when moving in and out

I tried the same thing. It sorta worked but the repo I had was too short and the gap at the base of the deck lid was too wide
That’s why I went the path of making them
