On my '40 Fordor the holes are near the choke and the throttle.

1916 New Hampshire license plate

I was given a 1916 New Hampshire license plate a while back. I would like to see it used by someone with a '16 in NH. The plate is free, you pay Flat Rate shipping (or come get it). You must prove...

Re: radio repair?

Kube,
I've been emailing Joe Dickhudt of Classic Auto Electric about my 1940 Zenith. He can repair it as built or modify it as an FM. I haven’t sent it out yet but will soon. Here’s his email:...

Re: Stuck wrench

A 7/16 open end wrench fits the square fitting of the adjuster on my car but I agree with Chap, get the adjuster tool from any vendor. Keep it on the car so you can constantly fiddle with the...

Re: Help me identify engine noise?

My '29 coupe had a similar noise. It turned out to be the camshaft gear. It was worn but more importantly someone had 'tightened' the flat sided nut with a cold chisel not very successfully. Get a...

Re: So long

I bought a '40 Ford sedan, sold the '28 Leatherback, had seller's remorse and bought a sweet '29 standard coupe a year ago. Couldn’t be without the A but I sure like the '40.
Paul, tell us what...

Re: tire pressure

I think it depends somewhat on the model. The coupes and pickups are light and 34# seems about right. In my ‘28 Leatherback I experimented with 35 all around and found the car oversteered on mild...

Re: Ed Whitney or Powermaster alt/generator?

When I bought my Standard Coupe a year ago it came with an alternator. Tom had sold me the VR for a long generator I had and I installed it no problem. I removed the alternator, put in the long gen...

Re: Parts vendors

You'll probably get overnight USPS from Joe's in MA. Except for a few parts from Bob Drake and Van Pelt, Joes is my go to vendor. You'll enjoy the interaction on the phone with the folks who take...

Re: battery

If you buy the Group 1 it should fit and perform OK. I use NAPA Group 1 batteries in my old cars and get 7-8 years out of them. I’m careful to keep the water/acid leve topped off and charge them up...

Re: First flathead in 40+ years

Great find, Keith. Nice to see another New Hampshire person who has both an A and a EV8. Love 'em both.

Re: Correct Radiator for 40 Deluxe

I have a 40 Deluxe with a split core, hole for the hand crank and the filler is in the middle on top. It looks original but it could have been replaced 40-50 years ago before I owned the car.

Re: Words of wisdom

Check out Van Pelt Sales. He has a good series of period written directions. Here’s the link to the 1940 instructions.

Re: Walter won't start !

Have you removed or refit the armored cable that screws in to the distributor? If it’s in too far, it will ground out. I have first hand knowledge of this situation....

Re: 40 Ford DLX antenna

Here are the pictures. One shows the top of the radio without the "radio nut" pn O1A-18808 in Joe's Antique Parts catalog p. 115. Another shows the radio nut installed in the dash with the brown...

Re: 40 Ford DLX antenna

Paul,
The top of the radio has a threaded piece that goes through the dash and is secured by a large thin nut. Over that is a brown plastic piece that also screws down on the threaded piece. The...

Re: Paint, urethane and acrylic urethane

Nick,
Here’s a good explanation from Hemmings. I’ve used both types of paints and find the newer urethane 2K paint superior in application and wet sanding. I’ve also found that the older acrylic...

Re: old headliner cleaning

I wouldn’t try it. Someone did in the past on the headliner in my '40, or a section of it, and it looks lighter than the rest but not enough to look cleaned up so they quit.
The long time previous...

Re: They're Still Out There

Gufshoz, where did you buy the weatherstripping? My '29 coupe has the same problem and I'd like to eliminate that draft. Thanks!

Re: Love our new mitchell overdrive

Ed, Congratulations on the new overdrive. What ratio did you pick and what shifter, cable or 'gear shift'? I’d like one for my '40 that has a 4:11 rear end and need to make those decisions. Thanks,...

How do you get spark advance in the Chevy six after welding up the vacuum advance? Is there an internal mod that you fit?

Re: '40 V-8 Mileage

My '40 Fordor, stock everything, with a 4.11 rear end gets between 15 and 18 depending on how fast I drive. Back roads, 40 mph gets the higher mileage while anything 50-55 is pushing the rpms and...
