Yes, higher compression ratio and taller gearing helps. Higher compression leads to higher efficiency which leads to more miles per gallon.

Depending on where you live and how hilly that is,...

OK, two points. First, most people do not drive a Model A because it gets good mileage or worry too much about it. Second, a higher compression head will help.

I keep records of my mileage...
