The problem I'm seeing is what's going to hold the lifter in place when the cam is removed
Lifters will drop into the oil pan

Just reread your question
You might be able to go thru the plug hole and with the right bent up screw driver hold the valve up

Air pressure holds the valves closed so u can install the spring and keepers one cly at a time or remove

Put about 60 lbs of air in the cylinders so the valves stay closed you might be able to do it
Done that a time or two on sbc to change valve springs

i bought aftermarket strikers for a 30 roadster i redid tried using them and gave up tossed them
welded and reshaped the old ones to work as they should

So change it every 1000 or once a year which ever comes first
I run 10w30 mobile one and change it once a year which is about 2000 miles i do run a filter tho

Almost sounds like a very bad vacuum leak
Replace exhaust intake gaskets and try it again
