Re: Oil - again

Yes it was SN, not SJ and I think you are correct.

Oil - again

I have just bought some Havoline 20-W50 oil for my Model A. I bought it because it says "better wear protection for older engines". But then I noticed it also says API SJ. I recall reading somewhere...

Re: I need help to overhaul 7-tooth steering

Yes, be very patient. Much easier with column out of car. Put the collar (top of column) on first.

Re: Model "A" Cars vs. Their Successors

Desert explorer Bill Kennedy Shaw (one of Bagnold's men) wrote in 1945 that the Model A was "the best car Ford ever made". He was focused on desert travel of course, where the Model A had definite...

Re: 1928 Oil Pan

Yes, but its a valid question - what if you have not been using detergent oil? Would it enable cleaning of the sump without removing the pan?

Re: Headlight bar rubber gaskets

I cut out the required shape from an old discarded pair of Kiwi (Red Band) gumboots and it worked really well. The fabric backing prevents distortion.

Re: Sandblasting sheet metal parts

After using a paint-stripper, use feed-grade molasses. It works well as a rust-remover and is guaranteed not to warp anything. Use a 6:1 mixture (water:molasses) strength and submerge for 10 days....

Re: One note to modern engine oils

Why? - I just bought some API 20-W50 SJ oil for my A. Should I not use it?

Re: Pickup bed rivets...

And they do not need to be heated when installed. Did all mine cold and they are still tight after 20 years.

Re: Exhaust manifold torque spec

How important is it to use the correct concave manifold washers?

Re: Gland ring recesses

To update this thread: In the end I decided not to use the gland rings because it was too difficult to seat them properly in the recesses. I would have had to file each one down unevenly, to match...

Re: Patina makes this too good to restore?

Please don't confuse rust with "patina". Anyone who thinks its a good idea to leave rust on a Model A (or any vintage car) must not not live in a wet climate like mine. Rust is the enemy!

Re: Gland ring recesses

Thanks guys, but I really wanted to know whether to machine the recesses or file the rings or both. I already decided to use the gland rings if I could fit them properly. Fitting them is my problem.

Gland ring recesses

I am shortly going to re-install my exhaust/intake manifold after having it planed flat at a machine shop. However I found that the gland rings don't fit snugly into the recessed parts of the head or...

Re: Biggest scare in a Model A

My wife and I were driving home at night in our 29 RPU with the top off, when we were hit from behind by a drunk driver. He was 5 times above the legal booze limit and was doing about 120 km/hr. The...

Re: RHD manifold removal

Maybe it would have been easier to remove the "collar" thing on the steering column that holds the spark/fuel levers. But even that would still have been very tight. I think my studs must stick out a...

Re: RHD manifold removal

OK I've done it now. For the record: I confirm that the only way is to completely remove the bottom column-to-chassis bolt and loosen the top one. Only then was it possible to pull the steering...

Re: RHD manifold removal

Thanks. I was hoping that someone might know a special trick, like pulling (ie rotating) the engine over from the other side to clear it away from the column. Might that work? It depends how rigidly...

RHD manifold removal

A question for all you RHD/antipodean guys: I am trying to remove the exhaust manifold from my 1929 roadster pickup. It should be a simple thing, but the manifold hits the steering column well before...

Re: overflow JUG

On start-up with a cold motor and a full radiator the water expands as it heats up and runs out the overflow pipe. My guess is that the seller did not like that happening and fitted the gallon jug to...
