Re: Help me identify these (3) 292 Y block holes in block

That larger hole in the middle is for the location of the T-Bird dipstick. If the engine was to be mounted in a full-size car, that hole was plugged, but all 292's had that hole whether it was used...

Re: Help me identify these (3) 292 Y block holes in block

The two threaded holes just above the oil pan were originally used to bolt a bracket to carry the two coolant lines (one for supply and one for return) from the '57 and later Ford-O-Matic water...

Re: To patch or replace frame crossmember?

If I remember right, it seems that the weight of the entire front clip rests upon the rubber pad between the front frame crossmember and the bottom of the radiator support bracket. That rubber is...

Re: Head light switch for a '54 converted to 12v

In agreement with dmsfrr's post, here is an electricians rule of thumb for you:
The lower the voltage is, the greater the amperage is, therefore the higher the voltage is, the lesser the amperage...

Re: Brake light switch for 55 ford

The OEM replacement switches are not DOT 5 silicone brake fluid compatible. But the repro parts suppliers sell a "low-pressure" brake light switch that is silicone brake fluid compatible. I put one...

Re: Fordomatic change in shift timing

So, what made me suspicious is that you mentioned engine rebuild, but then you said you re-adjusted linkages by "the book". What book?
The only place I know that gives a full and detailed...

Re: To patch or replace frame crossmember?

As far as I know, the new crossmembers available now don't have either the top piece for mounting the radiator and splash pan center support, nor the piece that wraps around the front in the middle...

Re: Can Anyone Recognize This Linkage?

Having an adjustable gear shift rod down to the transmission (such as the OEM part in my pic) simplifies ability to get the gear select lever in collaboration with the proper locations at the back of...

Re: Can Anyone Recognize This Linkage?

Actually, everything below the steering post rubber seal is identical on '55 & '56's. But from the steering column-to-dash clamp and above, everything is different between the two years.

Re: Lubrication for Y block water pump shaft (?)

DO NOT squirt oil down the 1/8 inch diameter hole in the water pump shaft neck casting. If you do, you will be replacing your water pump in less than a week. That hole is only there to allow water to...

Re: Rear Tire Jacking info on 1955 ford stationwagon.

BTW, sorry I could not get stock # on my shock absorbers. They only have the patent # stamped on the shocks.
AND, on my '55 Fairlane sedan, which has modern radials, the 5-leaf rear springs have...

Re: Rear Tire Jacking info on 1955 ford stationwagon.

I thought I mentioned before; rear tires on car are P215-75R15's. Rear tires on wagon are OEM 710X15's.
Here is a photo of the wagon rear tire as the wagon is normally sitting on the pavement...

Re: Can Anyone Recognize This Linkage?

Here is a photo of the factory original shift lever, bracket and starter neutral switch assembly.
Notice the shift rod down to the trans is terminated at the top with this adjustable clevis, which...

Re: Rear eend gear oil

90 wt gear oil is recommended for a stock rear end. If it has been converted to posi-track, you will need to add a tube of posi-lube. Does not matter what the gear ratio is.

Re: Can Anyone Recognize This Linkage?

JW, your part #7302 (shift lever) looks the same as the one on both my '55's. What is hokey on the assembly you have is the shift rod down to the trans lever. It appears that it can move a little...

Re: Can Anyone Recognize This Linkage?

Will see if I can take a decent photo of the factory setup on my '55 tomorrow and post it for you.

Re: Can Anyone Recognize This Linkage?

Okay, the U-bolt and silver bracket that sits on top of the steering column is original '55/56 Ford, and so is the shift lever just behind the bracket.
The gear shift link that goes from the shift...

Re: Rear Tire Jacking info on 1955 ford stationwagon.

You guys must be getting the wrong rear shocks. I can jack the back of both my '55 car and '55 Courier wagon almost to the top of the bumper jack and lower the scissor jack down (under the rear axle)...

Re: Auto Shift Lever Dowel? Pins

One thing I have noticed for sure is that at some point when your starter neutral switch is not engaging when the gear select lever is in neutral always seems to be the fault of the rubber bushing...

Re: Auto Shift Lever Dowel? Pins

JW, both my '55 Fairlane and '55 Courier are Ford-O-Matics and with 100% factory parts.
Not sure what you mean about the starter neutral switch at the trans. The factory setup has the starter...

Re: Auto Shift Lever Dowel? Pins

I've never had any wear in that dowel-pin or elongated holes thru the gear shift lever. Where you are much more likely to experience wear in the system is the rubber grommet thru the shift lever...

Re: Auto Shift Lever Dowel? Pins

I've actually drove a couple of those out of the gear shift lever at some point in order to replace the rubber insulator.
If you have the right size flat pin-punch it will come out fairly easily. Do...

Re: Rear Tire Jacking info on 1955 ford stationwagon.

My '55 Fairlane sedan has P215/75R15's on the back, 205's on the front. The 215's on the back are a bear to get off.
Remember, the wagon's have 7-leaf springs in the rear as opposed to the 5-leaf on...

Re: Wind wing part 2

I wouldn't be a bit surprised if a glass shop just glued the window fuzzy channels to the door frame and the front and rear door glass run channels rather than duplicating what the factory did with...

Re: 56 window glass

BTW, if you are planning to go with all tinted glass around the car, don't throw away that old windshield. There's only about three junkyard 55/56 cars left in the whole country that still have a...
