Re: Will all Veterans please arise.

0-5 USAF, Oct '83 - Jan '04. Cold war guy, never deployed.

My dad: USN 1945, USAF 1951-1954. He's with my mom in Japan, 1952. She was in the Red Cross. They met at Taegu, South Korea....

Re: Buying an enclosed car hauler

A half-ton tow truck is fine for open trailers at 75% or less of the truck's rated capacity. This would include a typical 16 or 18' loaded car-hauler. A 24-foot enclosed trailer would warrant a...

Re: Hand Throttle

I'm a math person by profession. Ignoring the safety aspects (and I agree with you completely there) - think of it in terms of set theory. Every throttle is a cruise control, but not every cruise...

Re: 38/39 grille center strip

I would be interested in that center strip myself! Mine is also missing.

Re: Hand Throttle

Well, technically it IS a cruise control. I use it as such on my flatfender jeep. It's just not sensitive to engine load changes.

Re: Polishing stainless steel?

Some stainless alloys are "magnetic" and some don't seem so like Type 304 which is pretty common. I think it depends on the chromium and nickel content. I'm guessing that some magnetism effect is...

Re: Lest we forget.

A final story: my own childhood best friend is a guy named Stan Lefever. Stan's stepson Rory Dunn was badly wounded in Iraq in 2004. Here's a pic of Rory, his mother Cynthia, and my friend Stan. ...

Re: Lest we forget.

I was a career USAF officer. I was fortunate enough to spend 3 years of my active duty time teaching mathematics to cadets at West Point. My son's best friend there was a young fellow named Wyatt. ...

Re: Lest we forget.

My dad's brother. He was a P-38 pilot with the 9th FS, 49th FG. My uncle was Capt Dick Bong's wingman when he went MIA. Bong went on to become the #1 US fighter ace in WWII, receiving the Medal of...

Re: Alaska attempt daily report

You've probably already passed through Whitehorse, but there's some interesting things to see if you get off the highway. This monster lurks at the airport.

Re: Alaska attempt daily report

The haze in the parks might be coming from the Fort McMurray fires.

Re: Alaska attempt daily report

I was on the MVPA 2012 Alaska Highway convoy. I drove a 1943 Willys MB (a wartime jeep). I don't recall problems with Chinese tubes in particular but we did have a lot of flats. There was another...

Re: Alaska attempt daily report

A suggestion is to ride the White Pass railway to Skagway. It's an amazing trip! There's probably round-trip opportunities from either Whitehorse or Skagway. There's also some amazing stuff to see...

Re: Alaska attempt daily report

Some of the Montana views of the Rockies to the west off highway 287, especially near the intersection with MT 200, must be almost exactly what Lewis saw on his return trip in July 1806. It's one of...

Re: Pikes Peak, Again

The Pike's Peak summit is a great place to bleed brakes, if your pedal gets a bit soft on the way up. Don't ask me how I know that. :)

Re: How to fix wheel bearing race spinning in hub?

I would recommend the Loctite method first. Their products are very good if used on clean surfaces.

Re: another one bites the dust

Some of these old gas stations might come with serious environmental cleanup price tags.

Think "old rusted-out in-ground gas tanks, spreading big VOC plumes into the local groundwater."

Re: It Ain't that pretty but it works!

I have a 6 volt Optima in my jeep. It works great, knock on wood. Plenty of cranking power and no corrosion issues at all. Cincinnati's "Restoration Battery" sells them in repro cases to the...

Re: copper head gasket?

Thanks! Copper glows... I didn't know that. Aluminum doesn't give much warning before it melts - hence the soot trick.

The guy in the video - I bet the copper would get even softer if he just...

Re: copper head gasket?

How do folks anneal the copper gaskets? A good way to anneal aluminum trim is with an oxy torch - first use oxy alone to put a layer of soot on the trim, and then add oxygen and heat the aluminum...
