Re: Looking for input /opinions

Sounds like you accumulated the mother lode of rare (and therefore expensive) period-correct Ford add-on parts to be placed in a valuable car.
Why skimp on the rest of the job? A set of bearings ,...

Re: Thinking I should sell my 8BA

Kids these days!
I don't get this whole diesel craze, but I'm sure there are other forums (and TV shows) that will welcome you with open arms.
As for selling the flattie, it's worth what a buyer...

Re: 51 mercury miss while running at 50 to 55 mph

Although I agree that ignition might be a problem, but you might also look into your valve train to see if you have a sticky valve or two.

Re: Vacuum splice - late flathead - best access point

The venturi vacuum on the loadamatic system increases with engine rpms (from increased air velocity passing through the venturi).

This is (generally) the opposite of manifold vacuum which...

Re: Toggle switch o'drive

You can run a toggle that directly powers the solenoid, but you have to have a good memory to prevent doing damage to the trans. If you try to run in reverse with OD engaged you can break the trans....

Re: Electrolysis solution?

If you buy a modern anti-freeze like Pentofrost (the purple/lavender stuff in a lot of German cars) it is specifically formulated to not cause corrosion, it lasts years and years, and it won't kill...

Re: Cracked block woes

I'd guess that at 60psi all the gaskets would be blown out, causing more trouble than it's worth.

Re: Cracked block woes

Isn't 60 psi a bit much? A cooling system is pressure regulated by the radiator cap with most caps for flatties between 4 - 12 psi, depending on year.

I'd be scared to death of 60psi water in...

Re: Electrolysis solution?

Your radiator is already grounded by being bolted to the frame. The electrolysis being discussed is an electro-chemical reaction and not related to the electrical circuitry of the car.

Re: Holley 885 carb vs Holley 94

Hence why I put "Sidedraft" in quotes. I know it's not a sidedraft, but lots of guys call it that.

Re: Holley 885 carb vs Holley 94

My understanding is that the 1949 Mercury body redesign left no room for the air cleaner to sit on top of the carb, so they used the "sidedraft" carb to put the air cleaner on the side. Some other...

Re: Battery shutoff switch voltage

When it comes to switches, its the amps not the volts that matters. A switch on a battery cable needs to withstand the same current that the battery cables do, otherwise the contacts will melt when...

Re: "NOS" vs "NORS" ?

My view:
NOS = OEM parts by the original vendors that supplied the auto makers.
NORS = Aftermarket replacements by different manufacturers that supplied auto parts stores.

Re: Intake valve guide seals

As far as I know these seals are to prevent vacuum leaks between the intake runners and the crankcase. On the exhaust side, I guess Ford didn't care if a little exhaust leaked into the crankcase. ...

Re: Dual 97s Too Rich!

Stromberg power valves are manually activated only when the throttle is floored (unlike Holleys that are vacuum activated). They also have a mechanical valve and not a rubber diaphragm, so no worries...

Re: Difference in compression ratio on cast iron heads?

I had heard that the aluminum "Denver" heads had the most compression because of the high elevation. Here's a chart I found in the internet years ago.

Re: What is this part?

That's pretty wild. I was gonna guess that was a grease cap retainer of some kind, but having rebuilt a '51 Merc front end it sure didn't look familiar.

On the subject of static, but an OT car, I...

Re: which way does the engine turn in the 59AB

Ski Doo snowmobiles (and possibly some others) have a system that reverses the engine to drive in reverse. Actually, any 2 stroke will run backwards if you just change the ignition timing and spin...
