I know you're trying to keep the cost to a minimum, but if you do want an original Holley carb for a '56, I have a few restored that I did this summer.

Very nice and interesting ! It must have been made early in the '38 model year, since there were 21 and 24 stud engines being built. All the carbs were Stromberg (last year).

The hole in the gasket isn't needed if using a Holley 94 type carb since the base is slotted.

Come to find out that neither block is the same. The 361 has a bore and stroke of 4.0469 x 3.50 and the later 360 4.05 x 3.50.

I'm no expert on identifying flathead V8's, but the carb is a truck carb. Trucks used the V bead on the top for mounting the air cleaner. Car carbs were flat where the air cleaner clamped on.

A '56 glass top should say 64B on the data plate for the body. 64A is a steel top Crown Vic.

The Edsel 361 is the same engine as the Ford truck 360 FE. For some reason they called the Edsel a 361. I guess to have it's own identity.

You won't notice any difference at idle or at 70 MPH. The fuel economy increase will be at light loads and steady speeds (manifold vacuum 10" and higher), when the RPM isn't high enough to advance...

I think the Mercury is a '46, so it would still have the 239 engine. But a slightly larger carb ain't gonna hurt.

If you modify your ECG 6 2 barrel carb per the procedure posted above, using a '57 distributor, you will get even better than 15 - 16 MPG since you will have more spark advance at part throttle light...

Humming or howling sounds like more of a gear noise, than a bearing noise.
If your sure it's coming from the rear axle, there isn't much you can do other than pulling off the back cover and...

Besides the things that Blucar mentioned above above, police packages came with all engines. The 226 flathead 6 cyl, the 239 flathead V8 or the 255 Mercury flathead that came only with the police...

The first Holley 1 barrel carb with an automatic choke was on the 1960 Mercury Comet. I know in 1960 Ford 6 cylinders still had manual chokes. Not sure when they went to automatic. Pretty sure in '65...

All '55 Merc's had 4 barrel carbs with auto chokes. A different set up from the two barrel carbs. All US '56 fords with a two barrel 272 or a four barrel had auto chokes. However the single barrel...
