I don't use the regular silicone sealer, instead I use Ultra Black & no gasket.

Re: Exhaust manifold
What is the diameter of the internal tube. I think the Haydees heaters were water heaters so it might be a water tube.

Re: 1948 ford Columbia Speedometer Cable
I have one on the shelf that is 22 3/4" face to face of the housing ends that seat against the shifter & speedo. I don't know what year it is or if there are different lengths.

Re: Horn rod again
Once the brass cup is soldered to the bottom end of the wire, simply file the solder flat so you have a wide contact point with the spring loaded horn contact in the middle of the wiring harness...

Re: body paint
Another alternative to expensive paint matching are the little Testers bottles of enamel for $1.99 at Hobby Lobby. You laugh but I painted my cabriolet Duchess & Lombard blue, and inthe Testers...

Re: Battery connections
Been using Optima for 15 years & never applied any corrosion preventer as there are no escaping gases to cause it. Terminals always stayed bright & clean.

Re: Horn
Push down on the horn button with the palm of your hand and rotate a number of times to break up the corrosion on it's contact. If that's the problem you will hear an improvement in the sound.

Re: Trip
I love following your trip. I reminds me of my cross the USA trip in 1973 in my 1928 Model A roadster pickup from San Diego to New Hampshire & back, 9,000. miles in seven weeks.

Re: Registration Cost Question
In California the registration fee is based on the price you paid for the vehicle, (or what you stated the purchase price was), the rest are added to that. I don't know what % the fee is.
