One way to test is with an Ohm meter. The reading between the screw and the the body of the sender unit is in the area of 12-14 ohms. Readings in this range usually indicate a good sender unit.

51504 bat‘s reply is the best option. Use a battery tender for idle periods longer than 2/3 months. Also you could always remove the fuse temporarily.

There is a knockout under the accelerator pedal. It is similar to the knockouts on the firewall used for heater hose. Firewall also has dimples for the screws to mount the relay.
