Re: Grinding When Cold

Shifting smoothly in an A isn't difficult if you do a few things. Of course the fluid needs to be up and proper viscosity, I use 100% Lucas Oil Stabilizer. Then: 1. Keep the hand throttle at LOW...

Re: Overheating issue - 1929 model a fordor

I'd seal the radiator cap, the overflow tube is where the excess should spew.

Re: curved-handle adjustable wrenches (not 'A')

Some of the old wrenches had curly cues and aesthetic decorations on them and built into them. The curved wrenches maybe are just an aesthetic thing? If you'll look at some of the old old farm...

Re: Oh shoot...

If you drill it to the proper size and are careful there is no reason that you will ruin the tap. I'd concentrate on getting out the broken bolt. Drill undersized first, being very careful to get it...

Re: curved-handle adjustable wrenches (not 'A')

Ive wondered the same thing. If you've ever tried to use them, you'll understand very quickly why they lost the evolutionary battle! I can see no reason for the curved hande, I hope someone with...

Re: Power shut-off switch

Just make sure the switch you use will not open with a bump from your foot, a tool, or etc accidentally. Remember, the battery is basically the voltage regulator on an A. Remove the battery and the...

Re: Mouse retardant - dryer sheets

Snakes don't like the scent of a cat nearby either.
Yeah, but neither do I!
Where I park the A for the winter has a gravel floor, I have a piece of plastic sheeting laid down, and pour a ring of...

Re: 6 volt Spartan horn on 12 volt system

Now MARK IT. When something is modified from original, unless its obvious, it should always be marked as such.

Re: Convert horn 6 volt to 12 volt

If it is a 6v horn and its been run much on 12V, its going to need some repairs.

Re: Gas mileage question

Your mileage sounds perfectly normal. Asking an A owner about mileage, top speed, etc is similar to fish stories; very little relationship to fact. :)

Re: Misses and pops

The FIRST thing to do is to try and determine if its a fuel or a spark issue. Obviously timing needs to be set correctly too. To check ballpark timing find top dead center compression stroke of first...

Re: Starting Issue - Need Ideas!

Use a voltmeter to give you an idea about where the problem is. Put one lead on the + battery post, not the battery clamp, but the post itself. Then put the other lead on the case of the starter. If...

Re: Motor does not pull properly, has no power ...

Three things I'd check: compression, clear unrestricted exhaust, and timing. You should be able to advance the ignition enough so the engine pings when pulling. Then retard just enough to stop...

Re: Turn signal works ok when motor is off, but...

I prefer to run a good quality filter/suppressor. Any modern accessory is going to have trouble in a stock A. Once you have a nice clean filtered power source you can use it for other things. Also a...

Re: Full Trans lub now clashing gears

OP states the problem started when he added oil to transmission. I'd recommend draining the tranny lube, let it drain at least overnight to get as much slop/sludge out as possible, then fill with a...

Re: Turn signal works ok when motor is off, but...

THe problem you are having is from the noisy electrical system in a Model A. You need to install a filter in front of the power point for the light/flasher wiring. They are available from ebay or...

Re: Engine priming/oiling BEST ideas.

If the engine has been sitting dry for many years, I've filled the crankcase with oil, (full up to the top) slowly rotate crankshaft a couple times, then drain down and start. Probably not necessary...

Re: My Mileage

Long term MPG vs trip MPG are different things. The OP MPG is very good. I have a stock 29 Fordor and average 15. Where I drive I pretty much have the road to myself so I cruise around 45 to 50 MPH.

Re: Turn signal beeper or other solutions

Use a beeper of any kind that will work on 6 Volt. Lots of them on amazon or ebay for a couple bucks. Wire it ACROSS the normally closed flasher contacts. Make sure the polarity is correct.

Re: Proper Operating Temp?

If everything is operating as it should be 50/50 antifreeze works just fine. Don't have to worry about freezing or corrosion. And yes, water will rust the block.

Re: optima battery prices............

Prices for tractor batteries have went up substantially. The last one I bought was $39.99 a few years ago, now they are $64.99. If you take care of your battery it will last for 10+ years unless it...
