You can check your coils w/a good multi meter, the primary winding of a 6 volt coil should be aprox 1.5 ohms, a 12 volt coil aprox 3 ohms.

Depending on the solenoid you probably need to run a switched 12V + wire to the small terminal on the solenoid to activate it. Typically a NO...

Test yours w/a pot of boiling water. Being that you're in Florida, pretty close to sea level it should read 212 Fahrenburg, or close to it.
Oops, that should be Fahrenheit.

When you re-install the starter, first put a stud in the top bolt hole, slide the starter in place using that stud for alignment, then install the other 2 bolts, finally, remove the stud and replace...

It sounds like a PO moved the distributor body to set the timing, rather than moving the distributor cam.
