Re: New Owner

I recently sent a good running not smoking 312 to the local machine shop. It was pretty dirty on the outside, fairly clean on the inside and had sat for several years. The previous owner got it...

Re: Fan shroud seal ('57 thunderbird)

Is it shown in the Trim & Sealer Manual? I've never noticed one in good condition before.

I just went out and looked at my '55 and also the shroud top from my '57.
The shroud from the late '57...

Re: Toploader main shaft interchange

Make sure the pitch of the speedo gear on the tail-shaft and the driven gear on the speedo cable match each other. Not sure if they can be right or left handed but check first.

Re: .Is this old "Y"block a 54 or 55 ? or what?

IF you're using the original Temperature sender in the head... be aware they aren't all the same.
Before '56 they were built for 6v, '56 was made for 12v but they look the same. May be marked 12v? ...

Re: .Is this old "Y"block a 54 or 55 ? or what?

Yes, that's a '56 4bbl intake manifold casting number. (photo 3 below)

ECZ-6015-A is a '56 292/312 block number.
http://www.ford-y-block.com/Block%20identification.htm

and ECZ-(6090)-C is a...

Re: .Is this old "Y"block a 54 or 55 ? or what?

Dana Barlow,
Like HRR said, you have to find the engine block casting number first. It will have "6105" in the middle of it.
There are sample photos of their locations at the link he provided.

Re: New Owner

There's a shallow oil passage groove in the underside of each head that gets clogged very easily, it supplies oil to the rocker arms.

Re: Paint Code AKS 1956 Ford Fairlane

That's a continuation of the 1955 page.

There are 2 different sets of page numbers, the page numbers of the PDF window and misc numbers that aren't printed on all the document pages.... I'm...

Re: Blinker on if pilot light off

The L & R turn indicator lamps in the dash should light up at the same time as the L & R turn signal lamps at each end of the car.

You may have loose or oxidized ground connections at some of the...

Re: Paint Code AKS 1956 Ford Fairlane

When there are multiple color code letters the 1st letter is the predominant exterior color, then the secondary.

From the link below: A = Raven Black, K = Fiesta Red, and S was used to note...

Re: '55 Ford car speedometer housing

Custom as far as I know.
There was an optional chrome 'eyebrow' trim headlight door on some '55 models.

Re: NASCAR 1957 Ford

Patrick brophy
The kits by Dyna-Flyte show up now and then on ebay for about $50.
I've got a couple for the distributors in my Birds. They seem to work well so far, about 2000 miles on my red '55,...

Re: 312 Y Block valve cover studs

Under the valve cover? As shown in reply # 16 back on page 1 of this thread? I've never seen that before.

Re: 312 Y Block valve cover studs

Some of the 'replacement' style studs may(?) be very slightly longer than the originals, if that will help.
4.25 instead of 4.125 ???
Call the Parts or Tech Help phone numbers at these example...

Re: 312 Y Block valve cover studs

Is there a chance the grommets are now made a touch thicker than they used to be?

Engine gasket sets come with 6 of them. Two for the valley pan and four more for the valve covers.

Re: Any Early Bird Seat Upholstery Experts?

"All or "always" is another term not to use regarding these cars. ;)
It may or may not have been a 'standard' option but finding a '55 Bird with a manual seat is extremely rare.
A very few do...

Re: Any Early Bird Seat Upholstery Experts?

I have heard (but not experienced) that some brands of seat foam can be thicker / firmer than what is in the car now.
It may put your legs closer / too close? to the steering wheel, the same with...

Re: Door fits on 55,56 and 57 T-Birds ??????

You aren't alone. Most '55 to '57 T-Bird doors don't fit as well as they could.
Especially sticking out at the lower rear corners.
It sometimes seems like the factory spec for door gaps may have...

Sorry, I've been scraping 100,000+ miles worth of oil, grease & dirt buildup from the underside of a '57 Bird the last couple days, to get it clean / ready for paint and the rebuilt engine &...
