Re: 3 speed column shift grinding in 3rd-Help!

What gear oil are you using? Some oils specifically state in small print on the back "not for use in synchromesh transmissions"
Use GL-1 in your transmission. NAPA carries it. It's straight 90 wt. ...

Re: flow direction in slingshot manifold

I'm running my slingshot with progressive linkage on the carbs. It operates like a single 4-barrel carb. For reduced fuel consumption on a trip, I slide a shim under the secondary carb to block it....

Re: Engine problem or normal?

The oil line from the block to the filter should have a restriction to limit oil flow and loss of oil pressure. I've found that about .060" diameter hole will be enough flow for the filter without...

Re: 10M made in Canada heads

The Mercury heads did not have a reduction in chamber volume. That would have resulted in an increase in compression over Fords. Mercury heads had an enlargement in chamber volume, to reduce...

Re: Was there a 4 cylinder motor in 34

The 33-34 B engines have a different front timing gear cover, crank pulley, water pump, and front motor mount from 32 B's. These parts make the front of the motor shorter to clear the rear sloping...

Re: 40 Ford to 40 Merc rear swap

If the drive shaft lengths are the same, probably. Some early Mercury inner drive shafts are one piece with the pinion gear, and if the shaft is too long, you've got a problem altering it.

Re: Cast brass heads

I've seen iron heads polished and brass plated, but that over 60 years ago.

I have a couple sets of Federal Mogul heads that are are cast bronze with aluminum tops, and they do have water...

Re: Fakin a Merc !

You may have the wrong starter plate. The starter should be perpendicular (90 degrees) to the flywheel. I had the same problem 50 years ago.
Be sure the flywheel is the one for the late engine. If...

Re: OHC Flathead

George Riley built some ohc engines that used Ford cranks, rods, and pistons, and pan. I think Riley made all other major comments.

Re: OHC Flathead

Ford engineering, in the late 30's or early 40's made 10 ohc engines based on the flathead block. The idea was to develop design ideas for the future. It's been reported that Henry ordered them to be...

Re: Heders

Fenton made several models to fit a wide range of years. Those models had different part numbers cast onto them.
Reproduction Fenton headers, made by Fenton, and others, come in only one model, and...

Re: 1949 Mercury differential ratios?

In the 60's I had a 51 Merc with the auto trans. The rear had 3:07 gears.

Re: Federal Mogal Heads - No Water Pumps Needed

I've only seen them in 3 styles.
32-36. They have water pump flanges, and water jackets, and a 2-piece design.
37, early 38, 21 stud. Those engines have water pumps in the block. The heads have...

Re: Pacific Northwest visit

If you visit the Portland area, send me a message. My last Colorado visitor was Rumble Seat. I enjoyed his visit. We both similar medical issues, but he liked the junk in my garage.

Re: pulling stock 32 engine

As DavidG says, there are no "ears" on the crossmember face to support the transmission mount.
But there is a short pin on the crossmember face, on either side that would seem to perform that...

Re: Fitting A 40 diff into a 34 chassis

A small amount of grinding on the rear of the straight spring will allow it to slip right into the crossmember. Even less is needed to fit into a 32 crossmember.
I've done this several times over...

Re: 33/34 Pickup difference?

Sales were slow in these depression years. Unsold units were left over, and often titled in the year that were actually sold. This has resulted confusion in later years, as to what model year the...

Re: Isky 404A cam - Harley Davidson grind?

I believe Isky's 404 grinds are an adaptation of Ed Winfield's number 4 profile for Offenhauser 4-cylinder engines. Offenhauser engines used radius lifters.
Potvin called his version "Eliminator",...

Re: Remove V8 oil pan on a '37 Ford Sedan

I did it on my 37 in 1964.
Jack up the car by the frame so that the front suspension hangs down.
Jack up the engine.
It will come off by dropping and rotating it.

Re: 1940 Pickup w / 4 speed serial number?

The serial number on my 4-speed bell housing has a "BB 18" prefix. It is from a 1932 truck with a 4-cylinder engine. The number is stamped on a cast raised pad that looks like the normal place for...

Re: 34 manifold to stock 32 engine

I would recommend using a 37 intake on a 32 engine if it's installed in a 32. The original 32 intake mounts the generator down low, as does the 37 intake. This positions the fan blades low enough to...

Re: 1952 Fordomatic rear-end ratio?

My 51 "Mercomatic" had a 3:07. That was in 1960. I can't say if it was factory installed or not. When I put a stick in it, it had to go. I had to downshift for every hill.
