Mister Moose, I think we are talking about two different things here. The original poster is referring to the splash shields that run between the front and rear mudguards and just above the running...

Just a guess here, how do you store your side curtains. If your side curtains are stored in a rolled up fashion these may be for keeping them rolled up, they do appear to be about the right length...

Could be that your fuel cap is not venting (blocked vent) or that you may have a radiator cap being used as a fuel cap. They look similar but the radiator cap is not vented.
Try loosening you fuel...

Like others have said, it's a beautiful colour and a very nice car. Do I dare mention the whitewall tyres. They look stunning with the body colours.
Now stop sitting around reading the ford barn...
