When GM first came out with their "alternatively connected" side-terminal battery, many people must have been very confused and rejecting of the entire idea.

There are places that specialize in this type is gauge repair.
I haven't used one in many years though, so I cant recommend one.

If your gauge has a long tube with a bulb at the end (I think so),...

Yep, that's my take on it also.

So it seems that the 'hard' state of the original tubes was an unintentional result of the tube forming process. Heating and quenching may have contributed to the...
