Almost sounds like he slammed the trunk hard enough to break something in the latch and the striker has fallen down and the catch can't retract.

Not sure about the 42-47 pickup as they have a different frame. The 48-52 F-1 pickups have the number stamped on top of the right frame rail near the front crossmember. Possibly the 42-47 pickups...

Dimple the housing where the bearing goes with a center punch. Dimple at 12 o'clock, 3, 6 and 9. That should tighten it up.

The chrome was aftermarket. From the factory they came with the plastic. Drake used to sell the metal pieces unchromed and you could paint them the same color as the original plastic. It worked good...
