Re: Tranny info and test?

On the small case, a person has to watch out about what ratio input to cluster gears. I don't think the 29/14 gears will fit in the small cast. 28/16 should be OK or the Lincoln gears if a person...

Re: Late gears in 39 Transmission

The gears from a up to 50 or early 51 F1 pickup would still work less the main output shaft but they might not be a ratio a person would want. 1949 thru early 51 Mercury transmissions still used...

Re: Interesting read in Hemmings about restoration costs.

While I agree most all cars in the low budget market have always been considered as throw aways by the original owners and even the manufacturers to some extent. The difference is basic simplicity...

Re: Any 52-54 Lincoln owners out there?

La Carrera Panamericana was a big deal back in the 50s. Lincoln cars did pretty well in that type race.

Lincoln took to the stock class pretty heavily. Keeping tire on...

Re: Rhythmic smoke puffing out of oil input breather cap

If it has a busted ring it will eventually score the cylinder & burn a piston. A person could do a single cylinder if it was traced back well enough as suspect. If it wasn't long since the last...

Re: Tranny info and test?

The loose sychro rings are sometimes refered to as balk rings or blocker rings since they act as a gear brake during the shift and allow for a close alignment with the recieving gear. That is the...

Re: Painting Over Water !!!!!!!!!!!

MEK is not as good as plain old methanol at drying a wet surface. Blow the surface off with compressed air and us a prep sol or wax & grease remover product. It will be dry of all solvents after 15...

Re: Interesting read in Hemmings about restoration costs.

The restoration of what is termed as low end antique cars such as the model A and many other marques started out as a hobby for DIY guys. The only big restoration shops back in the 50s & 60s were the...

Re: Cowl lights- AV8 Roadster

The smaller cowl lamps will likely look OK. The ones for 1929 are a bit large with the flat lens and there is really only one way to mount them unless you fabricate custom arms or something like...

Re: Painting Over Water !!!!!!!!!!!

It gets humid as hell down here when the coastal breezes are coming up from the south. If it's too humid, I can't spray. I would have to have an air conditioned booth and I don't. Once it heats up...

Re: Painting Over Water !!!!!!!!!!!

You can also use a conversion coating before priming. On steel I use Ospho. I always wipe my stuff down with prep sol before I shoot it and have never had a problem with condense. I don't completely...

Re: Tranny info and test?

Blockers came later at the end of the 30s. While the early types are synchonized in 2nd & high gear shifting, it's not quite as good a set up as the blocker type. A person still has to manipulate the...

Re: 3sp toploader; could it have worked like this?

If it has the late type gears & shafts then a person should use one of the late type synchronizer assemblies. These are interchangeable in sets from 1939 up into the 50s. The 81A type has the balls &...

Re: Tranny info and test?

That 32 transmission has a relatively low V8 number too. If you have a 32 vehicle, the numbers likely won't match unless it came from that vehicle. The trans cases were stamped at powerplant assembly...

Re: Overdrive cable sheath to tranny clip

The OP should include what make & model of car or transmission. We don't all know what ya got unless you post it. There was more than one overdrive transmission in use in the 50s.

Re: Backfire or popping when going down hill

Popping in the exhaust takes both unburned fuel and fresh air in order to happen. Most of the time it's a leaky exhaust that allows fresh air to leak in as was already mentioned. changing the mixture...

Re: Cooked corn in radiator

Folks used to use all sorts of stuff to try to stop leaks. Oatmeal was one. If rodents can get in, they will and its not easy to get that crap out either. The tubes are likely partially clogged too....

Re: NC? Request for Antique Vehicle exam

If I was ever going to stamp one, I would at least look for stamps with the original font style and size. I'm not a fan of the Chicom stuff. Stamping stuff can get a person into trouble.

Re: Marmon Herrington info and snogo

Chuck's is the only outfit that offers the lowest rear axle gear ratios for Timken Detroit axles but that won't work on a 4WD. The front and rear ratios have to match.
