Re: 1954-Orphan Ford OHV V8 (Y Block)

The 'Ford Y-Block' book by James Eickman does a pretty good job of listing the differences of the Cleveland and Dearborn 239 Y-Blocks.

As mentioned, stay away from the Dearborn engines as it is...

Re: Rear backing plates delima

Are your shoes centered in the backing plate? Check the tracks. Should be 1" from rivets to top edge of track (per Red Book page 1-41).

Originally drums are ~11" ID. Check from shoe to shoe to...

Re: Ventilation connector?

I used a piece of 4" HVAC flex tubing there. A couple of large hose clamps to hold in place. Excuse the dust, I haven't driven it in a while... :p

Re: Brake light problem

First thing I would do is check your grounds. Sounds like when you step on the brake light the voltage is trying to backflow thru the running light instead of going to ground. Hence the running light...

Re: Pulling engine and transmission...can I put both in cradle?

Re: Wierd compression

Sounds like you checked all of the normal things. You don't say but did you check the pistons and rings? Maybe stuck rings or collapsed ring lands from the back fire? Hard to believe it would happen...

Re: Clutch restauration, some questions

Werner, I was referring to picture #4 in post 24. Maybe I am missing it but it appears to me that the clutch fork for the throwout bearing is down to far? maybe I'm delusional.

Re: Clutch restauration, some questions

Nice job Werner. Keep an eye on that clutch arm, they are prone to crack after 88 years of use.
One question, do you have the fork for the throwout bearing in correctly? Seems the fingers should...

Re: Vacuum testing to diagnose fast idle

Re: Vacuum testing to diagnose fast idle

if you had a intake or carb gasket leak you would have low vacuum. Altho you have a pulsating vacuum reading it is not that low (15-19).

Trust what the vacuum gauge is telling you. With #2 low in...

Re: Front Tool Box

Yea, that's a problem with having a tool box on the front, covering the crank hole. I use a bent up 1⅜" wrench to turn the engine over for timing. Of course you can't use it the start the...
